UK Microsoft Support: Windows Server, Exchange, SQL Server and Microsoft 365

Supporting Windows since 1990, from the server room to the cloud

GEN first supported Windows 3 in 1990, and ran our own Windows hosting on NT in 1993. We are a Microsoft partner, on terms that leave us free to recommend whatever else is right for you, including moving a workload off Microsoft altogether. Nobody rings us to hear what Windows Server can do. They ring because mail has stopped going out, because a domain controller has fallen out of step with the others, because SQL Server has marked a database suspect, or because a Hyper-V cluster has lost the storage underneath it.

Service levels run from a next business day response to 30 minutes, 24 hours a day, every day of the year, with no contract, no minimum term and no notice period. Every call reaches one of our own UK engineers.

  • "Exchange has stopped delivering mail"
  • "The domain controller will not replicate"
  • "SQL Server says the database is suspect"
  • "The Hyper-V cluster has lost its shared volume"

What the Call Is Usually About

Most Microsoft faults are not where the error message says they are. A user who cannot log in, a mapped drive that has vanished or a server that cannot find another is usually Active Directory, DNS or DHCP underneath, and the symptom on the screen is several steps away from the fault that needs fixing. A Windows network is those services working together, so we support it as one system: the servers, the directory, name resolution, addressing and the file services on top.

We work on Windows Server from 2008 to 2022, on physical hardware, on Hyper-V and in hybrid configurations connected to Azure. We look for the root cause rather than the quickest way to make the symptom go away, record what we find against your environment, and track incidents so that a fault which keeps coming back is recognised as a pattern and dealt with.

Where the time usually goes

  • Active Directory replication, authentication and group policy
  • DNS that answers wrongly, or not at all
  • DHCP scopes, reservations and address conflicts
  • File shares, permissions and missing data
  • Failover clustering and high availability
  • Backup and disaster recovery for the whole server
  • Migration from one Windows Server version to the next

What We Support

A Microsoft estate is rarely one product. The same business usually runs Windows Server, SQL Server, Exchange or Microsoft 365 and a fleet of desktops, and a fault in one shows up in another. These are the areas our engineers work in every week.

Windows Server

Windows Server 2008 to 2022, on physical hardware, Hyper-V or connected to Azure. Deployment and migration between versions, failover clustering and high availability, and backup and disaster recovery planned so that a failed server does not become a lost one.

SQL Server

SQL Server 2008 to 2022, from a single instance to Always On Availability Groups, database mirroring and log shipping. We recover suspect and corrupted databases, find the query or missing index behind a slow application, and set up transparent data encryption, column level encryption and auditing where the data needs it. On premises, in Azure or both.

Microsoft 365

Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365), including Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, OneDrive and the Office applications. Licensing advice, migration from on-premises Exchange or another mail platform, and the security and compliance settings behind it. Once it is running, we support the users as well as the tenant.

Exchange On-Premises and Hybrid

Exchange Server on premises and in hybrid with Exchange Online. Failed servers recovered, mail flow traced when messages stop arriving, and high availability and disaster recovery built in. We migrate from older Exchange versions and other mail systems, and look after the anti-spam, anti-malware, data loss prevention and encryption around it.

Dynamics 365 and CRM

Dynamics 365 and Dynamics CRM for sales, customer service, field service and finance. We configure it to the way the business actually works, with custom entities, workflows and reports, and integrate it with the rest of the Microsoft estate and third party applications so the same data is not kept in two places.

Windows Desktop and Intune

Windows 10 and 11 desktops deployed, secured and patched, managed through Intune and Microsoft Endpoint Manager. Intune covers Windows, iOS, Android and macOS devices, with zero-touch deployment, conditional access and compliance policies, and Windows 365 Cloud PC where it fits. Windows 7, XP and older are covered by our legacy system support.

Enta Billing

For telecommunications providers we support Enta, the billing and provisioning platform that runs on Microsoft SQL Server. Installation, configuration, customisation and integration with other Microsoft applications, with the SQL Server underneath supported by the same engineers.

Azure

Migration planning, build and ongoing management of Azure infrastructure and platform services, with networking, identity and data protection set up from the start. We size for cost as well as performance, so the monthly bill matches what the workload actually needs.

Hyper-V

Hyper-V hosts and failover clusters, including live migration, cluster shared volumes and storage migration, and the backup and replication that protect the guests. If you are moving off Hyper-V, we also carry out migrations to Proxmox VE.

The Rest of the Estate

Few estates are only Microsoft. We also support Linux and macOS, and HPE, Dell and IBM hardware, so the server, the operating system and the applications on it can sit with one support provider rather than three.

If a Microsoft system is down now, raise it on the HelpDesk.

Microsoft Support Questions

Is GEN a Microsoft partner?

Yes. GEN choose their partnerships carefully and work only with vendors who leave GEN completely free in what it advises: no sales or sign-up targets, no restrictions against competitors, and no licensing entanglement. GEN remain free to advise a customer to stay on Microsoft, move to another platform, or run both.

Which versions of Windows Server do you support?

GEN support Windows Server 2008 to 2022, on physical hardware, on Hyper-V and in hybrid configurations connected to Azure, together with the Active Directory, DNS, DHCP and file services running on them. Windows 7, Windows XP and older Microsoft systems are covered by GEN's legacy systems support.

Do you support SQL Server?

Yes. GEN support SQL Server 2008 to 2022, from a single instance to high availability clusters using Always On Availability Groups, database mirroring and log shipping. That includes recovering suspect and corrupted databases, performance tuning, encryption and auditing. GEN also support Enta, the telecoms billing and provisioning platform that runs on SQL Server.

Do you still support Exchange on-premises?

Yes. GEN support Exchange Server on premises and in hybrid configurations with Exchange Online, including recovery of failed servers, mail flow faults, high availability and migration from older Exchange versions and other mail systems.

Can GEN migrate us to Microsoft 365?

Yes. GEN plan and carry out migrations to Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) from on-premises Exchange and other email platforms, including licensing advice, and then support Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, OneDrive, the Office applications and the users afterwards.

Can you help us move from Hyper-V to Proxmox?

Yes. GEN support Hyper-V hosts and failover clusters, and also migrate Hyper-V estates to Proxmox VE, from a single host to multi-site. See GEN's Proxmox support for the detail.

How quickly will an engineer respond?

Service levels run from a next business day response to 30 minutes, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and different systems in the same estate can sit at different levels. Every level reaches one of GEN's own UK engineers.

Do I need a support contract for Microsoft support?

No. There is no support contract, no minimum term and no notice period. Customers buy hours at published rates and use them as they need them, or take a fixed price annual maintenance plan per device if they prefer a predictable cost.

How We Support It

Our engineers are UK based and in-house, with no offshore outsourcing: the specialist who takes your case is the specialist who works it, and they hold the production experience to match the equipment in front of them. Risk is assessed before anything is changed, the SAPR method is applied to every fault, and five shifts a day mean an overnight handover is a conversation between two engineers rather than a note left in a ticket. Our AI runs on our own hardware in our own data centres, and it never writes a word you read.

There is no support contract, no minimum term and no notice period. You buy hours at our published rates, use them when you need them, and what you do not use carries over. How GEN support works sets all of it out in full.
